Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary, Maharashtra

Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary is located in the Niphad Taluka of Nashik District, Maharashtra. The Dam backwaters, marshland, grasslands, and constant presence of birds make it a place where nature feels alive in every direction.

The Nandur Madhmeshwar Wetland, declared a Ramsar site in 2019, is Maharashtra’s first Ramsar site. Spread over 1,437 hectares, it was created by the construction of the Nandur Madhmeshwar Weir at the confluence of the Godavari and Kadwa rivers. What began as a water management project has evolved into a thriving wetland ecosystem.

A day out in the nature at Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary, offered a refreshing escape into the wetlands. This sanctuary never fails to amaze with its abundance of avian life—both resident species from across India and migratory visitors that arrive between November and March.

Often called the “Bharatpur of Maharashtra”, the sanctuary hosts over 250 bird species, including migratory visitors like storks, and cranes. The mosaic of lakes, marshes, and riparian forests supports diverse flora such as babul, neem, jamun, and aquatic plants. It not only provides a paradise for birdwatchers but also acts as a buffer against floods and a lifeline for surrounding communities.
